The ACM is the professional body for Clinical Scientists in medical microbiology (encompassing bacteriology, food, water and environmental microbiology, mycology, parasitology, public health and virology).
The ACM represents Clinical Microbiologists in all professional matters, such as relations with the Department of Health and the Royal College of Pathologists, provides training and supports qualifications for the registration of health professionals and supports and organises scientific meetings and events to its members and the wider scientific community. If you are a Clinical Microbiologist working in the health service, university, or related profession then you may be eligible to join the ACM. Please contact the Membership Secretary, Miss Kate Rolfe, for further enquiries about applying (see the Contact Us page for contact details), or you can find a membership application form in the Membership Applications section of the Downloads Page. |

After the last ACM Council elections, there have been a few changes to your Council. We have said farewell to the Honorary Secretary Dr Malcolm Guiver, the Joint Meetings Secretary Dr Richard Barton and the Junior Training Representative Kerrie Eastwood. All of these members have served diligently on ACM Council for many years, and their devotion to the ACM and its members has shown in all of their hard work. We thank them very much for their excellent contributions, and know that they’ll still be actively involved in the ACM and all its works.
In their places, the members elected Dr Sheila Cameron to continue to be Chair of the Training Committee, Dr Anna Gottlieb who will continue to be Website Administrator & Advertising and Dr Kirsty Dodgson as an Ordinary Member. Dr Steve Green now takes on the role of Honorary Secretary, in addition to being the Federation of Clinical Scientists and Health Professions Council Representative, Dr Deborah Gascoyne-Binzi takes on the role of Joint Meetings Secretary and Training Committee member, and Dr Gemma Vanstone has been co-opted to take on the role of Junior Training Representative. We welcome all of our new Council members, and thank them in advance for what we know is a hard but worthwhile job! |

Over the past few years, membership of the ACM has gone up but the number of members who attend the ACM Scientific Meetings has remained pretty static. The ACM are always striving to improve our whole organisation for the benefit of our members, and we want to organise Scientific Meetings that are useful, relevant and interesting, but in order to do that we need to know what our members want. To help with this, the Meetings Secretary has produced a questionnaire so that you can have the chance to have your say. You can find this in the Meetings and Events section of the Downloads Page. Questionnaires can be returned by e-mail or post using the details at the bottom of the page, and the deadline for returning them is Monday 30th June.
Please take this opportunity to let us know what you think about the ACM Scientific Meetings, so that the next one we hold can be perfect for you. The latest information on the next ACM Scientific Meeting along with many other meetings, courses and conferences can be found on the Meetings & Events page. |

Dr Tim Wreghitt (pictured) has been awarded an OBE in the 2008 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his work on public health virology. Dr Wreghitt, a long-standing ACM member, has been a Clinical Scientist in the Health Protection Agency and an Honorary Consultant Virologist at Addenbrooke’s Hospital for 31 years. He is currently Regional Microbiologist for the East of England.
Dr Wreghitt has been awarded this honour in recognition of his national role in public health virology, such as setting up and coordinating the regional network for molecular testing for avian influenza in humans. He said “I am delighted to have been honoured in this way and I accept the award on behalf of my wonderful team of colleagues in the Health Protection Agency and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, without whom I could not have achieved these public health virology goals”. We would like to congratulate Dr Wreghitt on this achievement. |
